Signature plates, part of the premium Custom Plates range, appeal to those who appreciate both sleekness and understated sophistication. With fewer than 1,300 possible 2-character combinations available, the chance to acquire one of these coveted plates has become exceptionally rare. Due to the limited number of combinations, interest in Signature plates has recently surged in a growing market, with buyers eager to secure some of the most premium combinations in Victoria.

Signature plates are truly remarkable, distinguished by their unique designs and striking appearances within the Custom Plates range. These plates come elegantly framed, offering a sophisticated selection of four classic and widely popular background colours: black, white, silver, and gold.

With their stylish combinations of letters and numbers, Signature plates can significantly enhance the aesthetic appeal of any vehicle, making a personal statement on the road. David Nankervis, co-founder of the auction partner Trading Garage, emphasises this connection by stating, 'The opportunity to customise these plates with an individual's initials or the make and model of a vehicle has led to a surge in demand, fostering a strong emotional bond with this distinctive style of number plate.'

Rising demand

First introduced in 2007, the now limited availability of premium number plate combinations has increased their appeal and value over time. This trend is evident from recent auctions conducted by Trading Garage, where a Signature plate featuring a combination referencing the car model GT.3 sold for an impressive $60,500 in July 2024. ‘As with all number plates, rarity is the primary driving force behind demand; however, we have also observed strong results for plates that represent specific vehicle manufacturers and models’ explains David.

Not to be outdone by the rising appeal of Heritage plates, which can command up to seven figures, the single letter ‘V’ Signature plate sold at auction for a record $770,444 in July 2024 with two-letter combinations fetching anywhere between $46,507 (AV) to $150,000 (UU).

‘Signature Plates present an exciting opportunity for number plate collectors seeking rarity, along with the added personalisation that this range offers. The option to feature an individual's initials or a vehicle's make and model fosters a strong personal connection to the number plate’ concluded Nankervis.
